Lesson Learned from Young Travelers
Daily Journal — 23 Feb 2025
One day, my friend Nilam invited me to visit Mengiat Beach, Nusa Dua, Bali. She also invite her two coworkers, Sally from Spain and Eva from Germany, but they had studied at the same school in Spain. Both of them were 18 years old and working as volunteers at the hostel where Nilam worked.
Sunday’s weather was beautiful and luckily, the sun was out, and the sea was calm, perfect for swimming. While we were sunbathing, I casually offered to do a tarot reading for them and both of them were really excited and curious. They had never had a tarot reading before, whereas Nilam was already familiar with my readings. I started with Eva, and her cards were incredibly positive, mostly speaking about success and celebration. As we talked, they told me they were planning to travel to Sri Lanka next. They had already spent two months volunteering at a hostel in Uluwatu, Bali. They found this volunteering opportunity through www.worldpackers.com, which requires a payment for its services.
At one point, Nilam needed to use the restroom, and Eva accompanied her. Meanwhile, I continued the tarot reading with Sally. Her cards revealed that she was very protective of her energy, trying to shield herself from external chaos and focus on positive things. Then she asked, “How is my relationship with my father?” The cards showed a positive connection, suggesting they talked often. She then shared that her father had another woman and a new child, which led to her parents’ separation. Because of this, she had become very careful in choosing a partner. Even so, she still has good communication with her father. She never be in relationship before and wanted to wait for the right person. Many men had pursued her, but she felt that most of them only wanted to play around. She said, “I know many men’s behavior is similar to my father’s, so my advantage is that I can recognize who is serious and who just wants to play games.” And she wants her first relationship to be truly because of love.
She then asked, “What about my mom? Will she meet new partner?”
The Queen of Wands card appeared, which meant yes, already in progress. When she saw the card, she said, “That’s my mom! She loves sunflowers too!” referring to the sunflower depicted on the card.
I admired her. At such a young age, she had already strong values. She had learned from her parents’ relationship since childhood. From her tarot reading, I know that she would meet the right man at the right time, when she in a state of ease and calmness. When she is ready. It will happen naturally. There’s a card that show a King of Wands, it means a guy with fire energy like hers, creating a natural attraction, similar energy. In a short time, I learned a lot from Sally. I also told her that she was already embodying her feminine energy, embracing her natural essence. And she even took an oracle card with the message, "Don't back down. Stand up what you believe is right."
Later, in the car on our way to get food, Eva mentioned that Sally had only become fluent in English recently, during her time in Bali. She had spoken only Spanish her entire life. She admitted that she was extremely nervous when she first started working, but to us, she already sounded very fluent. Then Sally said, “We’ll volunteer again in Sri Lanka, gaining experience while getting free accommodation. Maybe we’ll look for online jobs to earn money for our next travels.”
Nilam asked, “Are you planning to continue your studies?”
One of them replied, “Maybe we’ll apply to university next year.”
I’m grateful for this sudden girl’s time at the beach. Sometimes we swam, sunbathed, share stories, took small walks surrounded by green grass and trees around the beach, take a pictures, and then went for a meal. Thank you Nilam for introducing me to the girls.
